Leap Year "Give Back Day" Program
For most people, leap years come and go without much effect on their lives. But Jerry Valentine was inspired by this extra day to give something back to the community so he created The Leap Year "Give Back Day" program.  It provides each employee a paid day off to volunteer in the community. Employees have used this opportunity to support many local causes such as Flower City Habitat for Humanity, Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester, Open Door Mission, Relay For Life, area nursing homes, a horse rescue farm, and a community kitchen.

Flower City Habitat for Humanity
On October 17th and 24th, Surmotech personnel joined the Flower City Habitat for Humanity group to build a home in the city of Rochester. Even with sore muscles and aching backs, there were smiles all around as everyone worked hard to help such a worthy cause.

Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester
During Breast Cancer Awareness month in October, several employees decided to create a cookbook entitled “Cooking for a Cure”. The cookbooks were given away and donations for the Breast Cancer Coalition of Rochester were accepted. Although the final tally is not in yet, so far nearly all 100 books have been given away and the donation is expected to be in the neighborhood of $1,000.
